When Naoko Takeuchi wrote Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon she also created five art books that came out concurrently with her manga. These artbooks, entitled Pretty Soldier Sailormoon Original Picture Collections (I-V) contained beautiful color images of the series. Each image is accompanied by notes/comments by Naoko that included thoughts and inspiration. I included the Materials Collection because many of you asked for them after the Princess Remix layout collection that Neo Nobility did in 2002. I have also added the rare Infinity Collection. This is a feature of all the royalty/future images in Naoko Takeuchi's art books. All note translations were derived from TMoTN.

artbook I-V

375 X 272 mm
The October issue of Nakayoshi 1992
Media: Color ink, tone
Paper: Canson
Artbook I

This is a work I love, which I drew using only my favorite colors. I really wanted to draw this princess pose. This is the sacred fountain of the Moon Sanctuary. The blue thing floating in the distance is Earth. This is the first image I drew of Princess Serenity and the castle ruins on the moon.

The February issue of Nakayoshi 1992
Media: Color ink
Paper: Canson
Artbook I

My image of a princess is inspired to a considerable degree by a Western book and magazines specializing in wedding dresses, featuring just dresses like this in this kind of pose. That's right. It's a wedding dress Serenity is wearing! When princesses are in full dress, they wear cloaks. And they sit on pedestals like sanctuary shells, like flowers.

The November issue of Nakayoshi 1992
Media: Color ink
Paper: Rough BB Kent
Artbook I

I drew this color picture as a title page with two facing pages, but I didn't have time and used a composite photograph in the background. It came out as a rather interesting effect. I composed a photo of a burning large Earth and space, but choosing the photos to use from catalogs was really fun. I love catalogs!

Artbook I

This is the two in their previous lives. While I was thinking of drawing it someday, I never had the chance, but I was able to draw it here. At home I have lots of drafts of pictures that I intend to draw someday but haven't been able to. Working drawing drafts of color pictures when I have free time, when something hits me, when I'm happy, since I finish them without thought, and it doesn't take energy, it's very enjoyable work.

Paper: New glass, tree-type medium
Artbook I

This is one that greatly appeals to me. In the book, the two on the right side of this picture are kissing. I was happy to be able to draw that passage of time. This picture has a title. It's "Memento Mori", which is French for "Think of Death."

370 X 545 mm
The March issue of Nakayoshi 1992
Media: Color ink, color spray
Paper: Canson
Artbook I

This is the title page for the conclusion of the first series of Sailor Moon. It had a great deal of impact on the first series. Probably because the four couplings on the right side were very unexpected. I was thinking of love stories of the previous lives of these couples. I'd like to be able to draw that someday...

Paper: New glass, tree-type medium
Artbook II

I initially planned to use this picture as a back cover. Instead, I used it as the first page of this collection thinking that it would best suit Sailor Moon Picture Collection, volume II. I really like it. I drew this picture and the one for the cover of this collection at the same time. In this picture I used my favorite art nouveau motif. In fact, I am dedicating my life to collecting art nouveau antiques.

The September issue of Nakayoshi 1993
Media: Color ink, color spray
Paper: BB Kent rough
Artbook II

Not being able to come up with a composition for the color title page, I really had problems with the expressions and the placement of Sailor Moon. As a result I didn't like it very much. It was a little difficult to draw the Earth, which is in the background of Neo Queen Serenity. Anyway, I intended to create a cool picture.

The February issue of Nakayoshi 1994
Media: Color ink, pastel
Paper: BB Kent rough
Artbook II

I drew this picture as part of a set for the February Issue of Nakayoshi in 1993. I like this picture although it ended up containing somewhat sad colors. Syria was the place closest to the image of destruction that I had in mind, but I did not have many actual references for it. As a result, I want to see it with my own naked eyes once, at any cost.

KC Volume 7, back cover
Media: Color ink
Paper: Canson
Artbook II

This is one of my favorite pictures. It started that I meant to draw it for the back cover of the comic book, volume 5. Having no time for it, however, I finally finished it for the back cover of volume 7. I am glad that I eventually completed it. This is meant to be a wine glass with Neo Queen Serenity's milky glass stem.

KC Volume 5, cover

Paper: BB Kent rough
Artbook II

Around the time I drew this picture I used to like scattering white rose petals in the comics. Princess Serenity has silver hair. I really like the colors purple, turquoise, and white.

Media: Water color pencil, color ink, color spray, pastel

Osabu said, "Let's put this picture on the last page." So I did what he said. I couldn't spend two hours on drawing that picture. As a result, I made some mistakes. Yet it was a memorable work since it became the color title page of the end of Part Two. Speaking of the color pictures, Osabu praises all of them, but which one do you like the best? Please let me know next time, ok?

And now the other messiah (other side showed Sailorsaturn). The column where Selenity is standing I drew while looking at a picture of a column of an ancient temple of the Roman Forum I took when I went in the fall of '94. The whole city of Rome is filled with historic ruins, a city so full of history it's dizzying. With these two opposite pages, I've put together the two messiahs.

Well, that means the cover picture of the 15th volume was this one. The medium lacquered on the back, with small glass grains mixed in, is my favorite painting base. ^_^ Why do they say Usagi-chan is princess-like only in her costume?...Oh, also, it wasn't intentional, but I forgot to draw the crescent moon and the hair ornaments into the picture...sniff sniff.

The May issue of Nakayoshi 1996
Media: Color ink, pastel, texture gel, glass beads
Paper: Coarse BB Kent
Artbook IV

This drawing was originally from a notebook of supplements intended for the fifth season, but for the climax of the fourth season consisting of the 10 girls in their princess figures, I put it into this book. I drew it in 1996 during New Year's Day. New Year's Eve they were recording the TV opening song, and New Year's Day I was driving my car full speed to Yamanasi. There I paid the customary first temple visit for the New Year, and then returned to Tokyo, and drew this picture.

527 X 642 mm
The May issue of Nakayoshi 1996
Media: Marker, pastel, tone
Paper: Coarse BB Kent, Japanese paper
Artbook IV

Various artists suggested to me the idea of drawing this, and it seems I actually fell for it ^_^ It's a drawing of 10 princesses in the old style. The 10 are in their formal princess outfits. I think I saw a place in the anime where the ten girls with these figures were fluttering about (maybe it was a dream ^_^).

materials collection

The last released collection (two years after BSSM was completed) by Naoko features her early sketches and ideas for Sailormoon. I altered the Japanese text into English translations and separated each princess sketch for easier graphic manipulation.

Infinity Collection

The Infinity Collection is the rarest of art books by Naoko Takeuchi that features Sailormoon doujinshi (fan art) artwork and notes from her friends. Images were scanned and posted by mahoushoujo.net, which is now closed.
